I began my career in medicine when I graduated with honors from The Escuela de Tecnicos en Enfermeria (School of Vocational Nursing) through the Department of Public Health in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico where I lived from 1984-1986. After returning to Washington State, I worked in Community Clinics as a bilingual Certified Medical Assistant translating and providing nursing duties for refugees from El Salvador and immigrants from Latin America. My experience includes working in Pediatric Neurology, employment as a Peri-Natal intake coordinator in Alaska, a Breast and Cervical Health Coordinator at a migrant clinic in Washington, Emergency Department Health Unit Coordinator and Technician, EMT training, Hospital Laboratory experience, and most recently as an Instructor of Allied Health Courses and Medical Assisting at Edmonds Community College, Everett Community College, and Seattle Vocational Technical Institute in Washington State. In 2009, my husband, Dr. Thomas Horst and I, decided to move to Maui, Hawaii, where I could pursue my interest and studies in herbal medicine and alternative healing, while Dr. Horst worked as a family physician at the Community Clinics of Maui providing healthcare for underserved people of the community. While there I completed training at the Maui Academy of Healing Arts graduating in August of 2010 as a Licensed Massage Therapist. I took my courses in CranioSacral Therapy through the Upledger Institute and studied cupping therapy with Lu Lyons-Bridges (one of my favorite mentors) and Bruce Bentley of Australia, both Master Cupping Therapists. Bruce is a Doctor of Chinese Medicine and has studied cupping for over 30 years and is considered one of the world's foremost experts on cupping. Lu is an amazing healer, psychic, herbalist and kinesionics practitioner. My Reiki studies were with Reiki Master Loretta Brown of Reiki Oasis which provides a multitude of services including sound/music therapy and loving Reiki healing.
As of September 2010, my husband and I have decided to move back to Snohomish, Washington where we can attend the needs of our family and enjoy their company more closely. I look forward to re-joining friends and loved ones and setting up practice.
I believe in using the appropriate 'tools' for the condition of the patient and will know when to refer the patient for outside care if necessary. I study the Hawaiian Huna Principles of living and healing and have compassion without judgment for all people needing help. My volunteer experiences include working with AIDS organizations,a teen suicide hotline, and as a weekend housemother for homeless and pregnant teen mothers. I am the fortunate mother of two daughters and stepmother of 2 other daughters and a son. I am also the proud grandmother of 3 year old 'Princess Pi' (pictured below) who called me 'Nene' as soon as she could talk. (Nene also happens to be the name of the endangered geese of Hawaii). My business name is in honor of my grandaughter and I hope to pass on some wisdom and knowledge as the changes in healthcare and living in the future world come upon us. My primary reason for studying new modalities of healing is that I wish to increase my knowledge in hopes of providing further assistance to my family and friends.
The time has come for us to take responsibility for our own health and use preventive measures, rather than relying on an outside source to "fix us". Experiment with combining East and West, use the American healthcare system judiciously when necessary, and take charge of your own body. I do not take credit for any healing that takes place with your visit. Rather, I am assisting your own body to heal itself. There is a reason that Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine, Indian medicine and other modalities have lasted for over 5,000 years. They did not have hospitals or access to prescription drugs and diagnostic imaging, yet over many years of study they developed diagnoses and designed formulas that still work today. Many of the practices such as yoga, tai chi, qi-gong breathing, and herbs are designed for self-healing. Healing, health and happiness are the right of all human beings. We are all one. Wishing you love, peace, joy and light. Namaste, Gracias, Aloha and Mahalo.
I am currently in the process of switching my Maui Massage license to a Washington State Massage license and therefore I am not able to legally accept appointments for bodywork until this transition is complete! Thank you for your understanding.
